Overcoming procrastination: Causes and Solutions.
Presented by Ruth Fowler, M. Ed, LPC.
Procrastination is postponing action until a future time. It is different than delay. However, procrastination is about fear, not time. True procrastination stems from a decision that action is impossible or impractical, from a habit that cannot be immediately controlled, from real inertia, which prevents doing tasks quickly, from fallible memory, and/or from skill deficiencies, physical deficiencies, or psychological roots. Be ready to discuss perspectives of procrastination, solutions to combat causes of procrastination, and techniques to stop procrastination. Ruth has been in private practice in West Houston as a psychotherapist and career counselor since 1995. Her goal is to help others help themselves so they can examine and overcome their distressing feelings: anxiety, depression, grief, shame, fear, low self-esteem, resentment, etc. She especially works with clients for anger management and addictive self-defeating behaviors related to alcohol, overeating, drugs, communication, and relationship problems. She specializes in short-term results using Rational Emotive Behavior therapy, also known as Cognitive Behavior therapy, together with other modalities. She is practical and solution as well as results oriented.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road—The Spiritual Path to Hope In the Treatment of Eating Disorders.

Spirituality is an important element in recovery. It is an ongoing process throughout the pain and healing, whereby one discovers the Wisdom within the addiction through telling their story. Spiritual direction is the art of companioning others on their journey of hope and transformation, walking beside the person in recovery as they awaken and return to the divine within. Fairy tales are humble helpers, enhancing the process of deepening self-awareness. The Wizard of Oz is a mythic story of the heroine/heroes journey. In order to live as our unique self, we have to find parts of our self that have been lost, not valued or honored; and, we must pick up these parts and own them. Using the Wizard of Oz as a backdrop, this presentation will talk about: the spiritual journey of hope, the importance of telling our story, and the use of imagination, dreams, and metaphor in spiritual direction in the treatment of eating disorders.

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness month, we are honored to have Jessica Bellant, Education and Prevention Manager for The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc. as our speaker.

Domestic Violence 101 focuses on the prevalence and dynamics of intimate partner violence. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the tactics used by abusers to gain and maintain power and control over their partner and reasons why survivors often stay or return to their abuser. The goal of the training is to equip participants with the knowledge to recognize domestic violence and further understand the survivor’s perspective.

Adolescent Therapy: Beyond Bad Behavior – An Integrative and client responsive approach to treating teens blending attachment work, play, and cognitive behavioral models. Presented by Kelly Peyton, LPC, RPT

Teens cross several developmental milestones often dealing with complex and intense emotional states with immature coping and support skills. Although older, teens appreciate an interactive and engaging therapy approach which often lowers defenses and increases the therapeutic relationship. Be ready to learn several interactive techniques for assessing and treating teens from a broad range of theoretical orientations. Although integrative, the presenter views therapy from an attachment perspective which will be woven into the fabric of this CEU.

Kelly Peyton is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional specializing in adolescent therapy at West Houston Counseling Center in Katy, TX. Kelly has several years of experience as a teen therapist and enjoys working with youth in the community. “Autism for the Healthcare Professional”. Presented by Dr. Dawn Bradford, founder of American Education Company. The goal of this presentation is to teach the healthcare provider about the broad medical definition of autism and the social implications of autism for families, schools, and healthcare providers. The audience will become familiar with recent research findings on autism. Based on one case study, the audience will observe “autism in reality” from the perspective parents, school personnel, and therapists in order to provide a visual representation of the typical behaviors of autism. In this presentation, Judy Smith and Sofia Georgiadou will show you how to apply systemic principles using a unique approach known as "Dimensional Mapping" to visually represent an issue and reveal the unconscious patterns that interrupt or hinder our ability to be fully successful. Dimensional Mapping allows us to translate an issue from a complex inner image into a clear visual representation of the issue. This will include a discussion about the dissolution of the 5 axes, the removal of the global assessment of functioning (GAF) and the presentation of diagnoses from a life course perspective. The second part of the presentation will cover the changes in diagnoses from the DSM- IV- R to the DSM 5. The final part of the presentation will discuss the challenges and controversies surrounding the DSM 5. This will include discussion of the current state of personality disorders in the DSM 5.

Behavior Analysis in Clinical Practice: An Overview
