September Monthly CEU Meeting: "Becoming a LGBTQ Competent Mental Health Professional

Presenter: Justyn Smith, Founder and therapist at the Queer Center, 1401 Richmond Ave, Houston, TX 77006 

The presentation will include a focus on intersectionality of culture and sexuality. 

Description:

The LGBTQ population is 3 times more likely to experience a severe mental health condition such as depression or anxiety. This community often faces struggles such as stigma, discrimination, violence, coming out and homophobia. It is critical that mental health professionals increase their awareness, knowledge, and skills with the LGBTQ population to truly provide the needed support in this community. 

Participants will learn relevant terms, community hardships, and current statistics realated to LGBTQ mental health. Experiential activities will be utilized to provide participants with an enriched learning experience. 

Lastly, recommendations, best practices and resources will be provided and discussed.
