"An Insight into the Efficacy of Expressive Arts in a Therapy Session"
by Terry Hoisington, LPC Associate, supervised by Suzan Cotellesse
Description:
Whether it is a drawing, painting, playing with clay, tapping or pounding on drums or moving to a selected piece of music, a client’s reaction to an event or emotion that they are having difficulty verbalizing in a therapy session can frequently be elicited by participation with one of the various means of alternative expressions just mentioned above. We’ll look at ways that these expressive arts can be easily integrated with more traditional therapies to provide therapist and counselors with information that can more effectively formulate individualized treatment plans
Presenter bio:
Twenty-three years of teaching English and Visual Art in both private and public schools and working with countless kiddos ad their parents, enabled me to develop an ability to connect easily with others from a wide range of backgrounds, interests and age levels. I experienced firsthand the awesome power of expressive arts to unlock inner voices by creating and clarifying meanings that helped students achieve hope and confidence. Feeling blessed daily by my students sharing of joys, fears and trials, I began realizing that many times their parents were also in need of support and guidance. So, returning to the university, I obtained a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, and am now honored to serve as a therapist at Thrive Family Counseling in Sugar Land.
Everyone is unique, so the meaningful solution to deal with problems is different for each person. Being passionate about motivating young people (pre-teens and adolescents) and adults to heal through self-awareness and understanding, I meet clients where they are by collaboratively identifying goals to formulate a plan of hope enabling them to cope much easier. The particular therapy used will depend on individual strengths, needs and interests. Knowing that art, music and movement are powerful tools for therapy, I bring this understanding of these possibilities into my therapy office to offer unique blends of traditional CBT, DBT and Mindfulness practices.
